
The Nigerian Senate on Monday announced plans to address claims made by a United States of America lawmaker, Ted Cruz that there is a systemic genocide targeted at Christians across Nigeria.
Politics Nigeria gathered that the Nigerian Senate has scheduled to discuss a motion concerning the claims made by the US lawmaker during its plenary on Tuesday, October 7.
The motion which was introduced by the lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume seeks to address the allegations of genocide against the country.
Supported by Senators Sani Musa Aliyu Wamakko, and Ibrahim Bomai, the motion is titled, “Urgent need to correct misconceptions regarding the purported ‘Christian genocide’ narrative in Nigeria and international communities”.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant security agencies to work towards deploying an effective data-based strategy in their communication process.
The lawmakers, in the motions called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the security agencies to ensure they provide accurate casualty numbers of those affected by incidents of violence across the country.
They also called for detailed contextual reports, and results of investigations concerning victims of insecurity which, they said should be made public.
According to Ndume and his colleagues, it is imperative to boost the communications system to combat misinformation both within the country and internationally.
The lawmakers also said that their proposal aims to address and rectify an issue of “dangerous misrepresentations of the country’s security challenges as a campaign of Christian genocide.”
Recall that Cruz had introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act in the United States of America.
The American lawmaker with the proposal targets Nigerian leaders with sanctions including visa bans, and asset freezing over alleged complicity in violence perpetuated against Christians by Islamist jihadists.
