The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged Nigerians to always ensure they verify identity of supposed officers breaking into their homes, especially at night.
The spokesperson of the commision, Dele Oyewale in a video where he was addressing some youths said, some of the people breaking into the homes of youths and well-meaning Nigerians are not their officers.
Oyewale said, “Its a carrot and stick thing, we have our own way of dealing with that and don’t forget that it is not all of these cases where you have people breaking in and you know. Most times, they are not EFCC officers.
“I am telling you, I have had call severally to say that some of these kids that you see online, you see people wearing hefty caps all the people wearing all these funny things. No now, that’s not EFCC,” Oyewale stated.
In the video seen by Politics Nigeria, the EFCC’s spokesperson said most people are impersonating the commission’s officers with the aim of discrediting the anti-graft agency.
He said, “I am telling you, but people do that to discredit us and we have been shouting and shouting.”
He further urged Nigerians and youths in particular to be thorough while interacting with officials when they seek entrance into their homes.
“I can’t recollect how many press statements I have written to say that all of these people they are not from us.
“Now if someone comes an says oh, “I am from the EFCC, ask him to establish his identity”.
“This is a country were people don’t interrogate,” Oyewale stated.
