As Nigeria battles the sudden surge in the number of COVID-19 cases, China has made a donation of 470,000 vaccine doses.
The donation, according to Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, will help the country in immunizing her citizenry.
While calling for collaborations on a global stage to help Nigeria fight the infectious disease, Jianchun warned against politicising issues surrounding COVID-19.
According to him, rather than blaming China for the pandemic outbreak, collaboration should be encouraged to out ways to eliminate the disease.
The Chinese ambassador also noted that Nigeria is a very important country to China due to its population and size.
“COVID-19 is a health issue. We need cooperation. We need unity to overcome COVID-19.”
He added that in the long run, China would support Nigeria in vaccine production.
Receiving the donation in Abuja, the Nigerian Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire admitted that the donation came at a very good time.
Ehanire said Nigeria stopped vaccination on Thursday, July 8, 2021, due to a lack of vaccines but with the donation, the vaccination of citizens would resume in earnest.
Corroborating Jianchun’s advise on ways to eliminate COVID-19, the minister called for continued collaboration and exchange of information to tackle the virus.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) recorded additional 317 COVID-19 cases within a day.
