Anambra Guber: ADC Candidate steps down

In a move that surprised many within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and beyond, Mr. Patrick Obianyo, the party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State, officially withdrew from the 2025 race on Friday, citing health concerns and personal reflections about the demands of political leadership.

Obianyo made the announcement during the party’s substitution primary held in Awka, where he addressed delegates with candour and humility. The primary, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saw Mr. John Nwosu, a former governorship aspirant under the Labour Party, emerge unopposed as ADC’s new candidate for the November 8 election.

Speaking at the event, Obianyo, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra, said the physical and emotional toll of the campaign had become overwhelming.

My blood pressure has been on a rollercoaster,”

“This dream—this ambition—became a heavier burden than I anticipated. After deep reflection and conversations with my family, I’ve decided to step back for my health and peace of mind.”

“I’m handing over this responsibility to a man I trust completely,” he declared, prompting applause.

Without hesitation, ADC delegates rose in a show of unity, affirming Nwosu as their new flagbearer through a unanimous voice vote. The absence of dissent signaled a rare moment of political harmony, with many seeing it as a fresh start for the party in Anambra.
