Internationally renowned heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital and declared clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
This was disclosed in a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.
According to the statement, Joshua is currently “heavy-hearted and deeply emotional” over the loss of two of his close friends who died in the accident.
The Lagos and Ogun State governments again expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically lost their lives in the road accident involving Joshua on December 29, 2025.
The statement prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength for their families to bear the painful loss.
It further revealed that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday afternoon to pay their final respects to the departed friends, ahead of their repatriation later in the evening.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also expressed appreciation for the outpouring of public concern, love and support following the unfortunate incident.
The governments equally thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support throughout the process, as well as the medical team and personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, who attended to Joshua and others injured in the accident.
The update followed Joshua’s involvement in a car crash on Monday in the Makun area of Ogun State, which claimed the lives of his two close friends.
The accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when an SUV conveying Joshua reportedly collided with a stationary truck.
A video from the scene showed the 35-year-old former heavyweight champion being rescued from the wreckage, appearing to have sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has attributed the crash to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.
