Senate Minority Leader and influential Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, Senator Abba Moro, has appealed to party members—particularly those from the Southeast—not to allow internal disagreements to escalate into threats, but instead to focus on constructive dialogue to resolve ongoing leadership issues.
Speaking during a live interview on Arise TV’s political show, Prime Time, Senator Moro disclosed that the crisis in the PDP is centered on the position of National Secretary, currently occupied by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who had contested the Imo State governorship election while retaining his position — a development that sparked significant intra-party tensions.
“When Senator Anyanwu went to contest for governor, he expected to win. By the constitution of the party, because you cannot hold dual positions in the party and in government, he would have had to vacate his position,” Moro said.
In anticipation of Anyanwu’s possible exit, the Southeast PDP caucus nominated Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye to replace him. This move, however, led to legal wrangling that escalated all the way to the Supreme Court.
He added that the Supreme Court invalidated the judicial process that facilitated Udeh-Okoye’s nomination and reaffirmed that the power to appoint or replace party officials lies solely with the party, not the judiciary.
“The Supreme Court came with a verdict that all those processes—especially the court processes that threw up a replacement for Anyanwu—were set aside,” Moro said.
He emphasized that while the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had accepted the Southeast nominee, the party must now respect the court’s directive and move forward through proper internal mechanisms.
To navigate the current situation and resolve the crisis, Moro highlighted that the PDP has established a seven-man committee. Chaired by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, this committee is tasked with ensuring the smooth organization and conduct of upcoming critical party activities, including the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27th and a national convention slated for August, where new party officials are expected to be elected.
Expressing concern over the rhetoric emanating from some party members, Senator Moro specifically addressed threats from certain quarters to “review their relationship” with the party if their preferred outcomes are not adopted. He characterized such threats as counterproductive and urged party leaders to exhibit courage and political will to find genuine solutions.
“The unfortunate thing here is the threat of reviewing their relationship with the party if their positions are not accepted in the first place,” Moro remarked. He reiterated that the current impasse regarding the Southeast nominee is a consequence of the court’s decision, not the party’s doing, and therefore the party must abide by the ruling.
