An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ojo Moore, has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar for allegedly turning the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari into a political spectacle.
In an article written on Tuesday, the APC chieftain said Atiku’s presence at the funeral, held in Daura, Katsina State, was overshadowed by what he described as “a well-choreographed display of political opportunism.”
According to him, supporters mobilised and allegedly paid by Atiku disrupted the otherwise solemn ceremony with chants and campaign-like enthusiasm, shifting the tone from mourning to political theatre.
“What should have been a dignified national farewell was reduced to optics and self-promotion,” the APC chieftain said.
He added that such conduct was “tone-deaf and disrespectful” to the legacy of the late president, who died in London at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
“This isn’t the first time Atiku has crossed the line between propriety and politics. His pattern of using sensitive national moments to score political points is worrying,” Moore added.
The chieftain noted that the burial of a former head of state should be above political rivalry, calling for greater decorum from public figures in moments of national grief.
“Leadership is not only about visibility. It’s also about knowing when to step back. Nigerians deserve better than this calculated insensitivity,” he said.
The late President Buhari was buried in accordance with Islamic rites, with dignitaries from across the country in attendance.
