Arise News, others were reckless in coverage of #EndSARS Protests – NBC

The Acting Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Professor Armstrong Idachaba, has shed more light on why the commission fined three broadcast stations over the coverage of the #EndSARS protests.

Recall that the broadcasting organization imposed a fine of three million Naira each on ARISE News, AIT, and Channels TV for allegedly using unverifiable video footage from social media to cover the #EndSARS protests.

In an interview on Wednesday, Idachaba disclosed that the commission sanctioned the three media houses for being reckless in the coverage of the #EndSARS protests.

According to the NBC boss, the media houses failed to calm the tension in the country when hoodlums hijacked the protests. Rather, he said the stations distorted and manipulated storylines during the protests which contravened the NBC code.

Idachada said that the media houses started reporting fake infusions and intrusions into the narrative, and using unverified graphic presentations. He also accused the media houses of giving false claims, misrepresentation of facts, which he said was in clear violation of the provision of the broadcasting code.

The NBC boss, however, commended the Nigerian Media for their professionalism during the coverage of the protest at the beginning.
