Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Monday said no arrested member of the outlawed group has been convicted of any crime since 2015.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Ejimakor who made this claim via his known Twitter handle, also said members of the proscribed group picked up by security agents are only being persecuted.
“Do you know that of the thousands of #IPOB members arrested from 2015 to date, NONE has been convicted of any crime, including terrorism. Why? Because the cases couldn’t stand up in Court. In other words, persecution is not the same as prosecution. #FreeNnamdiKanu. Period!” Ejimakor wrote.
This newspaper reports that IPOB is a leading seccessionist movement in Nigeria, spearheading the charge for a sovereign new nation – Biafra. Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is presently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) following his arrest in Kenya in June 2021.
It was the second time Kanu would be apprehended on the orders of the Nigerian federal government since he founded the organisation in 2012.
