Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has delivered a compelling message in honour of this year’s Children’s Day celebration.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the Nigerian Politician took to his verified Twitter handle, emphasising that although May 27 is dedicated to celebrating children, our world is still plagued by pressing threats that jeopardise the prospects of a promising future for our children.
Abubakar called upon parents, guardians, and all stakeholders involved in shaping a better future for children to unite and develop specific policy frameworks that will ensure a more equitable future for them.
He also highlighted the urgent need to address issues such as the high number of out-of-school children and the prevalence of child labour and crime, which continue to hinder the potential of Nigerian children.
The full statement reads as follows:
“I extend my congratulations to children worldwide, and especially in Nigeria, on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day celebration. Today’s celebration serves as an opportunity for current leaders to build a brighter future for society. Despite designating May 27 each year to celebrate children, our world is still plagued by existential threats that undermine the possibility of a promising future for our children.
In Nigeria, we continue to grapple with the challenges of out-of-school children and the alarming rates of child labour and crime. Unfortunately, not enough has been done to establish a robust protective system for children, shielding them from these harmful influences. Whether at the governmental or civil society levels, our failure to construct the necessary safeguards to protect our children’s future is inexcusable.
Therefore, I urge parents, guardians, and all stakeholders committed to securing a better future for our children to collaborate and develop specific policy frameworks that will ensure a fairer future for them. -AA
