Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is expected to officially collect his African Democratic Congress membership card today.

The move is seen as another major step in the ongoing opposition regrouping ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku confirmed his plans over the weekend while addressing supporters in Adamawa.

His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, later restated the decision on Sunday, noting that the former vice president would complete the registration process today.

Rasheeth wrote, “Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is set to officially join the ADC tomorrow, a move that could significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape.

“During his speech to ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa State, he announced his plan to register with the African Democratic Congress on Monday.”

The development signals a firmer alignment within the opposition coalition that adopted the ADC as its joint political platform earlier in the year.

Although Atiku, Peter Obi, Babachir Lawal, and several other opposition figures publicly endorsed the coalition months ago, many of them have yet to formalize their membership.

In Adamawa, the state chairman of the ADC, Shehu Yohanna, recently urged Atiku, Lawal, and other top figures to pick up their membership cards.

He confirmed that Atiku would be in Yola for his birthday and community outreach programmes.
According to him, the visit offers a perfect window for the former vice president to complete his registration.

Yohanna added, “I believe he will use the visit to officially register his membership and collect his card.
I think the former SGF and other intending members will do the same to legalise their membership.”

Atiku’s expected registration comes shortly after the ADC addressed controversies surrounding the absence of both Atiku and Obi at the unveiling of the party’s new national secretariat in Abuja on November 17.

The party dismissed claims of internal division and explained that the event was arranged quickly, making it difficult for some leaders to attend.

ADC National Chairman David Mark described the new secretariat as a major symbol of the coalition’s long-term political ambition.
He said the coalition was built on the demand for accountability and stronger leadership.

The ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, also refuted rumours that either Atiku or Obi was withdrawing from the alliance.

According to him, “There’s nothing to suggest that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us.”

He further clarified that the new secretariat had no connection to Atiku’s previous campaign office, stressing that the former vice president did not donate the building.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has maintained silence on his next political steps.
His allies say he is being extremely deliberate about where he will seek his 2027 presidential ticket.

Dr Yunusa Tanko, a close associate of Obi, stated, “No, Obi is not abandoning the ADC coalition… He will make a statement soon because he needs to get it right now that a lot of people are showing interest in him.”

Tanko also noted that Obi prefers to avoid a political environment that may restrict him.
He reiterated that Obi’s public declaration is expected after the Anambra election.
