’IPOB caused low voter turnout in Anambra’ – Aisha Yesufu

Prominent Human Rights activist, Aisha Yesufu on Saturday blamed the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the low voter turnout experienced in the Anambra State Governorship election.

According to Yesufu, IPOB “scared people away from the polling units, and this favours the All Progressives Congress (APC)”.

Yesufu’s tweet via her verified Twitter handle was an objection to fellow activist and Muhammadu Buhari’s administration critic, Deji Adeyanju’s post. Adeyanju had posited that “IPOB may be vindicated”, because the proscribed group’s suspension of its earlier planned sit-at-home exercise will eventually show people that the Anambra 2021 gubernatorial election is “fraud”.

“IPOB will not be vindicated. They are the cause of the lower turnout. How many will risk coming out to see whether the lifting is true or not?
“They have scared people away from the polling units and this favours APC with the federal might to thumbprint,” Yesufu wrote.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Saturday Anambra governorship election was characterised by low turnout and apathy.

As expected, many people shied away from participating in the election owing to the prevailing atmosphere of insecurity and threat by the agitators during the pre-election period.

It was learnt that in most polling units in Onitsha, Nkpor, Obosi and Ogidi, the centres with hundreds of registered voters didn’t record up to 20 per cent turnout. At Awada ward 9 polling unit 006, the total number of registered voters was 787, while the total number of votes cast at the end of the poll was 56. It was the same story at Awada Primary School polling unit 003.
