Bayelsa EDTF Unveils 20,000-Liter Solar Borehole at Swali Technical College

The Bayelsa Education Development Trust Fund (EDTF) has commissioned a new 20,000-liter solar-powered borehole to alleviate chronic water shortages at Government Science and Technical College, Swali, Yenagoa. The facility, the 11th brought online in the past week, will serve both the school’s boarding population and the surrounding community.

Residents and students gathered on Thursday to witness the inauguration, led by the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, represented at the ceremony by Permanent Secretary Mr. Simon Peter-Okene.

“We remain committed to ensuring that all our Technical Colleges have reliable water and ancillary amenities so they can fully implement their boarding programmes,” Dr. Emelah said.

He added that additional water projects are currently under construction across Bayelsa.

Mr. James Dankaba, Chairman of the Swali Community Development Committee, praised the EDTF’s intervention: “This borehole is a game-changer for our community. It will end the daily struggle for water and free up time for residents to focus on other productive activities.”

The college principal, Mr. Pedro Igbudu, echoed this sentiment: “Our students can now concentrate on their studies without worrying about water shortages. We are deeply grateful to Governor Douye Diri and the EDTF for this critical infrastructure.” Even the students marked the occasion with a jubilant dance performance.

Dr. Charles Daniel, Chairman of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Committee on Education, commended the Legislature’s partnership with the EDTF. “We’re delighted by the pace and quality of these water projects. I urge the EDTF to expand similar initiatives into more rural communities that lack basic services,” he said.

Dr. Alice Atuwo, Executive Secretary of the EDTF, and Prof. Francis Sikoki, Acting Chairman of the EDTF Board, confirmed the project aligns with Governor Diri’s directive to bolster public-school facilities. “Our goal is to transform the learning environment for every student in Bayelsa,” Prof. Sikoki stated.
