On Tuesday, March 25, the bill to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State passed its second reading in the Nigerian Senate.
Sponsored by the Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, a motion on the bill was seconded by the Deputy Senate Leader, Oyelola Ashiru of Kwara State.
Bamidele while making a presentation on the floor of the plenary said the institution when established would produce an array of highly skilled graduates whose key focus would be to run innovative growth across the nation.
He noted that the university would also provide educational training ground in various fields, including Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering and Mathematics among others and drive Nigeria’s digital economy.
His words, “This is the fundamental justification for the establishment of this specialised institution of higher learning, Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State.
“For Nigeria to become one of the world’s leading economies as currently being pursued by this administration, we must be ready to adjust and position our educational institutions so that their products are geared for the technological challenges inherent in such projections,” Bamidele said.
In his address, Ashiru noted that with the rising profile of Epe, approving such an establishment would advance Nigeria’s digital space and economy.
He also urged the leadership of the Senate to approve the bill for the creation of the institution.
