President Tinubu launches National Health Fellows programme for primary healthcare centers

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme.

A statement from Ajuri Ngelale, presidential spokesman, said the initiative aims to comprehensively upgrade existing primary healthcare centres and construct over 8,800 new facilities across all local government areas in the country.

Under the National Health Fellows Programme, young Nigerian fellows will be engaged in all 774 local government areas to serve as fiduciary agents.

Their primary role will be to monitor and track the development and performance of Primary Healthcare Centers, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of accessibility and quality.

The fellows will play a crucial role in measuring the performance of healthcare facilities against all financial inflows, guaranteeing transparency and accountability in the management of resources.

The fellowship programme will be housed in the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Fellows will be recruited, remunerated, and equipped with the necessary tools to monitor Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported health facilities nationwide effectively.

President Tinubu, who serves as the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, expressed confidence in the abilities of young Nigerians.
