Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State on Tuesday joined the 2023 presidential contest, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.
Ayade, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is rounding up his administration, having almost completed his two terms.
Ayade had met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja behind closed doors and – like APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu and Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State – reportedly informed the Nigerian leader of his presidential ambition.
About seven weeks to the deadline for the submission of the lists of candidates for next year’s General Election to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the ruling party is yet to decide on two niggling issues that may shape the presidential race: from which parts of Nigeria will the presidential candidates of the APC come from, and how will they be nominated.
Apart from Ayade and Umahi, other serving Nigerian Governors that have expressed their interest to run for the 2023 presidency include Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State.
