BREAKING: ASUU extends strike by 8 weeks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its strike by eight more weeks, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

ASUU executives took the decision after meeting on Sunday evening. The meeting, at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), extended to this morning.

This announcement follows the one month warning strike which expired today Monday, 14, March 2022.

According to Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad Danbazau, an official with ASUU, the latest decision to extend the strike is to allow the union and the federal government reach an agreement in other to avoid a future strike.

He said two months is enough for the apex government to do the right thing on the matter.

Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, had said the Federal Government is working on measures to resolve the issues which led to the present strike by ASUU.

According to Ngige, the government has so far paid over N92 billion as part of implementation of the agreement reached with the union in December 2020.

Nigerian university students affected by the strike have been groaning, with some accusing authorities of not being concerned about their plight.
