Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that opposition parties will form a coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election to challenge the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.
Atiku made this announcement during a press conference in Abuja, where opposition leaders gathered to condemn President Tinubu’s recent declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.
The event took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre at 10:00 AM and was attended by key political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai a representative of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, among others.
The press conference focused on President Tinubu’s decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire State House of Assembly for six months. The President also appointed retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as the state’s sole administrator.
Opposition leaders strongly condemned this move, calling it an undemocratic attempt to take control of Rivers State.
During the question-and-answer session, a reporter asked Atiku whether the presence of major opposition leaders at the event signaled a coalition ahead of the 2027 election. The journalist noted that the last time opposition parties united in such a manner was in 2015 when the APC defeated the ruling party.
In response, Atiku said, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.”
His statement was met with loud cheers from the crowd.
