About 49 people have been killed by suspected bandits in Goronyo area of Sokoto State on Sunday night.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that several residents have fled the community following the insecurity in the area. The bandits rounded up several villagers and shot them dead.
The assailants attacked the market in large numbers on Sunday night, shooting sporadically and killing several persons.
Sokoto is one of the states ravaged by insecurity in the North, a situation that has worsened under President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. Just recently, the state government ordered the shutdown of telecommunications services in some parts of the state to curb the prevailing banditry in the state.
Earlier this month, 19 traders were killed by Bandits in Unguwan lalle area of the state. Bandit attacks in Sokoto have been on the rise in recent months due to the military onslaught on Bandits in neighbouring Zamfara state.
The fleeing bandits have now built camps in the Sabon Birni district from where they raid villages.
