BREAKING: CBN denies asking banks to collect old N500 and N1000 notes

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Friday said it did not ask commercial banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 notes.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that a report by a Nigerian newspaper claimed that the CBN directed commercial banks to start collecting the old notes from the public with immediate effect.

The report said the CBN however pegged the maximum amount the banks can collect at N500,000.

The old N500 and N1000 currencies were no more legal tender.

It was reported that the apex bank ordered the banks to collect the monies instead of going to the CBN office following difficulties encountered in getting access to the bank nationwide.

But in a statement by Osita Nwanisobi, its Director of Corporate Communication, the CBN stated that the report is false.

The statement partly reads: “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has been drawn to some fake and unauthorised messages, quoting the CBN as having authorised the Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes.

“Members of the public should disregard any message and/or information not formally released by the Central Bank of Nigeria on this subject.”
