Chinese Navy Escort Task Group (ETG) 162 has docked at the Lagos port in an official visit to Nigeria.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the arrival of the Chinese vessel was met with a warm reception by officials from the Western Naval Command, with Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan leading the delegation.
Comprised of the MSL Destroyer NANNING, MSL Frigate SANYA, and Supply Ship WEISHANHU, the task group aims to enhance maritime security in the region.
Mr. Chi Jian Chun, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, expressed his optimism about the visit, which is scheduled to last from July 2 to 6. He emphasized that it would not only deepen the relationship between the two countries but also bolster maritime security in West Africa.
The MSL Destroyer NANNING docked at the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Berth 21, while the remaining two ships remained at anchorage.
Ambassador Chun highlighted the significance of the delegation, comprising over 700 people and three ships, which had arrived in Nigeria. “This visit is aimed at strengthening and improving our relationship and cooperation,” he stated. He further emphasized the importance of the visit in showcasing the harmony between Nigeria and China.
Chun expressed China’s commitment to working with Nigeria to promote peace and harmony while contributing to the international community. He believed that the visit would enhance cooperation in the military sector, enabling both countries to overcome obstacles and foster a closer partnership.
During their stay, personnel from both navies will engage in various activities, including sports, exchanges of mementos and gifts, and discussions on future collaborations. The concept of “sea riders” will allow Nigerian Navy personnel to board the Chinese ships, fostering friendship and understanding between the two nations.
