BREAKING: CJTF Operatives Die in IED Blast After Repelling Terrorist Ambush in Borno

Nine members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed in the early hours of Tuesday after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in the Marte area of Borno State, shortly after the group repelled a coordinated ambush by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram insurgents.

The tragic incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. on May 27, according to a situation report issued by the Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) Base 8.

The CJTF operatives had been engaged in a prolonged exchange of gunfire with heavily armed insurgents who launched a surprise attack on their position.

Despite being under intense pressure and facing a numerically superior force, the CJTF successfully repelled the assailants. The insurgents, reportedly sustaining casualties, were forced to withdraw.

According to the report, the CJTF operatives, in an effort to recover the body of a fallen colleague, inadvertently triggered an IED believed to have been planted by the retreating militants. The blast killed nine operatives instantly.

“They planted IED and CJTF who went to recovered one of their deceased body on their way back to their camp stepped on the IED and nine of the CJTF died X few civilians who were captured in the community by BHTS were gruesomely slaughtered,” the CTU situation report stated.

It was further confirmed that several civilians abducted during the insurgent incursion were later executed in cold blood before the terrorists fled the area.
