A Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt has declared Rt. Hon. Ehie Edison as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Edison is backed by the state Governor, Sim Fubara.
The court also issued a restraining order preventing Hon. Martins Amaewhule, who is allegedly backed by Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, from further claiming leadership of the assembly. Dumle Maol was also restrained from parading as the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly.
In addition, the court also warned against the use of Thugs and Police officers to forcefully gain access to the Assembly Complex.
This verdict comes amid a heated political battle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike.
On Monday, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal divisions within the PDP. The defectors, led by Amaewhule, had previously initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara before the intervention of President Tinubu ultimately stalled the process.
Commentators believe the defection is primarily motivated by the lawmakers’ loyalty to Wike and his desire to maintain his political influence in Rivers State.
Recall that Wike has previously accused Governor Fubara of attempting to dismantle his political structure within the state.
However, during a recent meeting with traditional rulers, Governor Fubara said he would not “surrender our mandate and progress to intimidation, blackmail and deliberate sabotage”.
What happened to Edo lawmakers will surely happen to these rivers puppets lawmakers.Una mumu too much
Good movie, the 27 members that defeated to Apc remains suspended
Nice one
Good judgement,,paying judas wike back with his own coin
Judiciary, our last hope in this nation
We are watching.
Declare the 27 seat vacant
Things fall apart
Please, the order was given by a Rivers State High Court judge and not Federal High Court, though both Courts have equal jurisdictions.
God’s kingdom will not have this type of things. Daniel 2:44 and Matthew 6:10
Justice is about to be served
This is “Kano state part 2”.
Nothing goes for nothing.
The battle has begun
Congratulations to Rt, Hon Edison Ehie
Another blow to Wike. He should accept every legal judgement against him. As governor, Wike enjoyed using his political power on the judiciary against Rotimi Amaechi. Today Fubara is doing same to him. This should be a lesson to the Abuja man – he will not stay in power forever
It’s so painful that when you are expecting Nigeria to get matured then some Nigerians will bring more confusing situations like we’re experiencing right now in Rivers state. It then means the defected assembly members are not even qualified to discuss impeachment of the governor after all. What is the meaning of this rubbish ? Why did they allow themselves to be fooled ?
The twenty seven members remained suspended as is instituted in the Constitution.
