Ifeanyi Ejiofor, lead counsel to the detained self-acclaimed leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has said that he was nearly lynched by his colleagues at the Federal High Court in Abuja at the trial of his client on October 21, 2021.
Ejiofor, in a recent interview with Arise TV, said his colleagues were unhappy with the decision of the Department of State Services (DSS) to deny them entry to the courtroom at Kanu’s penultimate trial, hence his determination to ensure they were allowed in on Wednesday.
He however lamented that it was the same scenario on Wednesday, as they (some of Kanu’s lawyers) were not allowed into the courtroom at all.
“Most of the lawyers that came were denied access to the court. And we brought this to the attention of the court. We mentioned it to the court; we mentioned our frustration to the court. Not only lawyers, the media were not allowed to come in too. We were trying to solve it outside the court; I narrowly escaped being lynched by my colleagues — last adjourned date. So we were trying to resolve it because it is something we consider worrying. Courtroom is our jurisdiction where we belong,” Ejiofor said.
Asked why his colleagues wanted to lynch him, he explained: “because I didn’t kind of [sic] protest on their behalf. And I told them I mentioned to the court what happened to them. So this time around, I said let me resolve it.
“All of us, we were at the doorcourt, discussing it, trying to resolve this issue, and our bags were inside the courtroom. So, there was no walkout whatsoever.”
Furthermore, Ejiofor claimed that there was an order from the court not to allow them in.
