There was an explosion at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the main venues for the 2024 National Sports Festival.

The blast happened when a diesel-laden truck supplying fuel to the venue’s generator suddenly caught fire sending athletes and spectators running for safety.

It is learnt that emergency workers arrived quickly and managed to bring the fire under control.

Sports activities at the venue, including handball, squash, and badminton, have now resumed.

In a statement issued after the incident, Kayode Akinmade, media aide to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, confirmed that no casualties were recorded and praised the prompt response of emergency services.

We thank God that the fire was immediately put out to avert any casualties,” the statement read. “To this end, we want to assure all our athletes and the people of the state of safety and that there is no cause for alarm, as the situation is under absolute control.”

The Alake Sports Complex is hosting indoor events at the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival—popularly known as the Gateway Games—which is scheduled to run from May 16 to 30.
