The federal government has revised the minimum age for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions, lowering it from 18 to 16 years.
The development was announced on Tuesday in Abuja during the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) 2025 policy meeting by Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa.
The adjustment is in response to concerns that the earlier age threshold delayed entry for gifted learners and was not in line with global best practices.
The government also warned that any admission conducted outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be considered illegal, with individuals involved liable to prosecution.
