President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that N470 billion has been earmarked for university revitalisation in the 2023 Nigerian budget.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that funding for the revitalisation of public universities is among the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), a body that has been on strike since February.
During the presentation of the N19.76 trillion 2023 budget estimates to the joint session of the National Assembly (NASS), on Friday, President Buhari renewed his appeal to university lecturers to return to the classroom.
Buhari, however, said universities must find means of funding instead of solely relying on government funds.
He also said he expects staff of Nigerian universities to have a better understanding of issues in the country.
Buhari entered the temporary chamber of the House of Representatives, venue of the budget presentation ceremony at 10:07 am.
There was heavy presence of personnel from military, paramilitary, and safety agencies on the premises.
