Gov Sanwo-Olu faces backlash for attending lavish birthday celebration in Caribbean Island

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has come under scrutiny for his recent attendance at an extravagant birthday celebration in Grenada.

The lavish event commemorating the 50th birthday of Abuja-based businesswoman Aisha Achimugu sparked outrage as details of the opulent festivities emerged.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who returned to Nigeria on Wednesday morning, had reportedly spent several days at Calivigny Island, one of the world’s most expensive resorts, to partake in the week-long birthday carnival.

Premium Times reports that the private celebration, organized by Achimugu, included a series of lavish parties, yacht gatherings, and performances by A-list musicians from Nigeria and abroad.

It was revealed that the governor had flown over 7,500 kilometres to Grenada for the birthday celebration, leaving Lagos without his leadership for days.

The Calivigny Island, rented for seven days at approximately $132,000 per night, added up to a staggering $924,000, not including additional charges.

The governor and other participants also alternated between Calivigny Island and Silversand Grenada, a luxurious resort where some of the celebration’s events were held.

The extravagant birthday celebration, costing billions of naira according to sources, has drawn criticism for its conspicuous display of wealth and opulence.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has replied Premium Times with photos of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s meeting with Grenadian Prime Minister in Grenada.

Shortly after the story broke out on Wednesday, the Lagos State Government released photos of Sanwo-Olu in Grenada presenting a miniature of the Blue Line train to Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Michelle.

The government, on its X handle said the presentation was made after talks on bilateral relations between Grenada and Lagos State in St. George at the weekend.

The government wrote: “The two leaders exchanged ideas on tourism, agriculture and other economic interests. Mr Sanwo-Olu also attended some social engagements during his visit. Michelle spoke about Granada’s 50th anniversary coming up in February.”
