The National Security Council on Thursday afternoon revealed that the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter of Boko Haram, is responsible for the attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State.

On Wednesday, the Ondo State Government gave a new casualty figure from the terrorist attack.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, stated in a press statement that as of Tuesday midnight, the number of victims was 127 while 40 had been confirmed dead.
Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, confirmed ISWAP’s involvement in the Ondo attack while briefing State House Correspondents after the National Security Council meeting in Abuja today.
In April, ISWAP claimed responsibility for an explosion that it said killed or injured 30 people at a market where alcohol was sold in Taraba state.
It has also recently launched attacks in Kogi State, marking an expansion of the area where the ISIL affiliate operates in Nigeria.
