Tragedy struck in the early hours of Friday as a fire engulfed part of the Lagos State Government Staff Quarters located on Odunsanmi Street, off WEMPCO Road in the Ogba area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred around 2:20 am, caused significant damage to the two-story building, specifically affecting one of the two-bedroom apartments in Flat 5, Block 21, a three-story structure housing 16 two-bedroom flats.
According to a preliminary investigation conducted by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire was sparked by an electrical surge in the children’s room of the affected flat.
The resulting blaze completely destroyed the children’s bedroom, leading to the loss of properties worth millions of naira.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident, emphasizing the swift and coordinated response by the Agency’s Lagos Response Team (LRT), the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Their prompt action ensured that the fire was contained and extinguished before it could spread further and cause additional damage.
“Fortunately, there was no loss of life, and no injuries were sustained in the incident,” Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu reported.
“We also took the opportunity to enlighten the victims and other occupants on the proper use of electrical appliances to prevent future occurrences,” he added.
As of 5:00 am, personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and Nigerian Police were still on the scene to ensure that the situation was completely under control.
