Governor Siminalayi Fubara is set to return to office as Rivers State’s chief executive following the exit of Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (Rtd) from the Government House on Wednesday evening.
Ibas vacated the seat after completing the six-month mandate handed to him by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the emergency rule declared in the state.
In a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday, President Tinubu announced the expiration of the emergency proclamation, which began on March 18 and suspended the functions of the governor, deputy governor, and state assembly. He confirmed that the measure, endorsed by the National Assembly, would not be renewed.
During his tenure, Ibas supervised local government elections, made board appointments, and implemented decisions that drew criticism from many, who described his actions as unconstitutional.
