Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has put his long-anticipated defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on hold.

The governor took the decision following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State, saying it would be insensitive to proceed with any political celebration at a time the nation is dealing with another security tragedy.

Kefas explained that the situation demands empathy, unity, and a focus on the safety of Nigerian children, not political fanfare. According to him, moments like this require leaders to rise above party lines and stand with families in distress.

He stated that his administration has consistently prioritised security, education, and the protection of vulnerable groups, and it would be morally wrong to continue with any major political event until the kidnapped children receive the urgent attention they deserve.

“In the light of the deeply troubling incident of the kidnapping of innocent school girls in Kebbi State, I have taken the solemn decision to postpone my scheduled declaration and movement to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

He added that, “At a moment when our nation is once again confronted with the painful reality of insecurity, solidarity and compassion must rise above politics. The safety of our children… is far more important than any political activities or ceremony.”

Kefas expressed sympathy for the affected families and the people of Kebbi State, noting that his thoughts are also with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the country grapples with yet another security challenge.

He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the girls and called on Nigerians to remain prayerful, vigilant, and united. A new date for his formal movement to the APC, he said, will be announced when appropriate.

The governor had earlier scheduled his defection for Wednesday, following his announcement last week that he was leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.
