BREAKING: Gunfire Erupts in Guinean Capital, City Center Sealed Off

Heavy gunfire erupted have erupted in the centre of the Guinean capital, Conakry, with security forces blocking off the area, POLITICS NIGERIA has learnt.

“There is gunfire from both automatic and weapons of war in Kaloum,” the political and administrative heart of the seaside city, a witness from the area said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The city center has been sealed since dawn, we can neither enter nor leave,” a shopkeeper added.

“I wanted to go to the port area where I work but was prevented from leaving (Kaloum), where armoured vehicles have been deployed.”

The cause of the gunfire was not immediately clear. The country has been ruled by a military junta since September 2021, when Colonel Mamady Doumbouya overthrew President Alpha Conde in a coup.

Aside from Guinea, several other countries to have seen coups since 2020 are Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Gabon.
