A correctional facility in Abolongo, Oyo State was attacked by unknown gunmen on Friday evening.
Eyewitness reports reveal that the attackers set free many prisoners.
The heavily armed criminals stormed the facility at about 10pm on Friday, using grenades to gain access and set prisoners free.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the attack left the facility in disarray with warders scampering for safety.
Other security agencies have since mobilized their personnel to support men and women of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in tracking down the gunmen and rearresting prisoners.
Confirming the incident, Spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in the state, Olanrewaju Anjorin said that the senior officers of the agency were on their way to access the level of damage.
He said, “Yes. It has been confirmed that the attack actually happened.”
“And right now, the comptroller of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and other top officers are assessing the situation.”
