Five people have been killed and many others injured in attacks by suspected herdsmen on two farming communities in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday night.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the attacks took place in Ayilamo and Mahanga settlements around 10:20 p.m. when residents were sleeping at their homes.
An eyewitness, Tersoo Apera, said the herdsmen first attacked the Mobile Barracks located on Anyiin-Ayilamo road in Mahanga settlement, killing two people in a thatched house, The Nation reports.
They thereafter moved to Ayilamo, the headquarters of Tombo ward, and shot dead three people.
The injured were reportedly taken to Ayilamo Comprehensive Health Centre, which was overwhelmed by the number of casualties. Some of the injured were later referred to Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi.
The traditional ruler of the area, Chief (Dr.) Enoch Ikyumen, who visited the health centre for first-hand information, appealed to the state and federal governments to order security agencies to protect his subjects.
He decried the sustained attacks on his people.
The Security Adviser to the Governor, Chief Joe Har, confirmed the attacks and killings. He identified the victims as Ayev Jôgunô (Mbavihi—Mbazar); Faiga Mwuese Apefan (Mbazar); Msendoo Tertese Vaachia (Mbagum); James Mhen Nyerga Iorliam (Tse-Ihyôôn—Iwendyer); and Orgbee Mnguerorga (Tse-Nyajo—Mbaiwem).
