Suspected hoodlums on Monday attacked the correctional center along Sapele Road in Benin, Edo state, releasing prisoners from the facility.
It was learned that the hoodlums started the attack on the facility as early as 7 am and broke a part of the wall of the facility, while some climbed the fence into the prison yard to free the inmates.
However, an armed squad of prison officials reportedly engaged the hoodlums in gunfire battle which left some persons injured.
A few of the inmates escaped with gunshots while an elderly man was recaptured while walking away like a passerby.
The thugs also vandalized the High Court 4 which is beside the prison and burned down three police stations in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state.
Reacting to the incident, Crusoe Osagie, the Media Aide to Governor Godwin Obaseki, told reporters that the hoodlums exchanged fire with security operatives at the Maximum prison in Benin City.
“The hoodlums are currently exchanging fire with the security personnel at the Maximum security prison in Oko, Benin City,” Osagie told Channels Television.
