Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has officially informed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of her planned return to the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, following a recent Federal High Court decision overturning her suspension from the Senate.
This newspaper gathered that the Inspector-General has yet to restore her security details, with no formal response issued by the Nigeria Police Force as of the time of filing this report.
In a letter titled “Police Acknowledgement – Notification of Resumption and Request for Restoration of Police Protection”*, the Kogi Central Senator referenced the court judgment delivered in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/543/2024. The court had ruled that her suspension was excessive and went beyond the powers conferred on the Senate under Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution.
The court subsequently ordered the Senate to reinstate her and allow her to resume her legislative duties.
In anticipation of her return, Akpoti-Uduaghan requested the immediate reinstatement of her official police security detail, citing potential risks typically associated with high-profile political developments. She stressed that the ongoing security threats surrounding such matters necessitate adequate protection while carrying out her constitutional responsibilities.
She further noted that the protection of elected public officers is crucial to the effective discharge of their duties, and disclosed that a Certified True Copy of the judgment—particularly Order 12—had been attached to her letter to the police.
The senator also expressed faith in the Inspector-General’s commitment to the rule of law and the security of public office holders.
The statement read, “I write to formally notify your esteemed office of the recent judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/543/2024, which declared my suspension as excessive and ultra vires the provisions of Section 63 of the Constitution. Consequently, the Court ordered that the Senate should recall me to continue representation of my constituents that sent me to the Senate
“In compliance with the judgment, I am scheduled to resume legislative duties at the National Assembly on Tuesday, 22nd July 2025.
“In light of the security challenges that often accompany high-profile political matters and the need for adequate protection in the course of my official duties, I respectfully request the immediate restoration of my official security detail. This is crucial to ensure my safety as I resume work and continue to carry out my constitutional responsibilities without hindrance.
“For your kind reference, I have attached a Certified True Copy of the judgment of the Federal High Court and do draw your attention, particularly, to Order 12 of the judgment.
“I trust in your usual prompt attention and continued dedication to the rule of law, and I appreciate your support in ensuring the safety and protection of all public office holders, citizens and residents. Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem,” she added.
