BREAKING: All INEC Nat’l Commissioners in closed-door meeting over Adamawa election

All National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are currently in a closed-door meeting at the commission’s national headquarters.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the meeting in Abuja is coming barely 24 hours after the electoral umpire directed its Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, to stay away from all activities of the electoral umpire and the election in state.

Recalla that on Sunday, Yunusa-Ari declared Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the election while the collation of results was yet to be concluded.

The 2022 electoral act empowers only the Returning Officer (RO) appointed by INEC to declare and announce the winner in an election.

Mele Lamido is the RO for the governorship election in Adamawa.

Minutes after Yunusa-Ari’s proclamation, INEC issued a statement declaring the announcement as “null and void” and also postponed the collation of the results.

Barring further unforeseen circumstances, this newspaper learned that INEC would announce the results of the controversial and dramatic Adamawa State governorship election on Thursday.
