The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended three local government council chairmen for embarking on an alleged illegal foreign trip without proper authorization.
The suspended chairpersons are Hon Mubarak Ahmed of Birniwa, Hon Rufai Ahmed of Gumel, and Hon Umar Baffa of Birniwa, who reportedly travelled to Rwanda.
According to reports, the officials departed the country without seeking the required permission from the state’s executive or legislative authorities, violating the Jigawa State Local Government Law.
The House of Assembly confirmed that the chairpersons disregarded an earlier order prohibiting local government council chairmen from travelling due to the preparations for the 2024 state appropriation bill presentation by Governor Malam Umar Namadi.
Hon Aminu Zakari Tsubut, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Affairs, tabled the motion for the suspension, citing the chairpersons’ actions as insubordination and negligence of their primary duties.
He stressed the need for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal sanctions.
The House unanimously approved the suspension of the three chairpersons, mandating their vice-chairmen to assume their duties.
A committee led by Hon Lawan Muhammad Dansure, the Majority Leader, has been established to investigate the matter and report back within four weeks for further action.
