Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday rejected the declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the president-elect.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that speaking at a world press conference in Abuja, the opposition party said it has commenced legal action to nullify Tinubu’s victory and ensure that its candidate is declared the winner of the February 25 election.
The PDP’s position comes hours after the Labour Party made similar claim and vow.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi promised that his party will “reclaim” its “mandate”.
“We will explore all legal and peaceful options to reclaim our mandate. We won the election and we will prove it to Nigerians,” Obi had said.
This newspaper reports that Tinubu, 70, is the president-elect of Nigeria. The presidential candidate of the APC polled a total vote of 8,794,726 to defeat Atiku who scored 6,984,520 votes, and Obi, who garnered 6,101,533 votes.
The presidential candidate of New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso came a distant fourth with the total votes of 1,496,687 votes.
Who won the election? OBI claims victory and now ATIKU claims same. We should understand Democracy is a game of choice and numbers where the majorities win and the minorities’ interest are taken care of. There is no intimidation, cohesion , enforcement or threats in Democracy. In my personal opinion, the election was credible and balance despite the little hitches here and there. No election is perfect. Even the USA with over 200 years of democratic experience faces election challenges. If we want Democracy, then we should accept its principle otherwise we should seek another way or method to conduct elections. We can’t continue like this. Every elections deem unacceptable to some due to some primordial interest
