BREAKING: Nationwide blackout as national grid collapses sixth time in 2024

The national grid experienced another collapse on Monday, October 19, 2024, marking the sixth total blackout this year.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal, by 7:00 pm, the entire grid plummeted to zero megawatts (MW), leaving the country in total darkness.

The latest incident saw all 22 generation companies (GenCos) go offline, intensifying concerns over the nation’s fragile power infrastructure.

Despite the widespread outage, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had yet to release an official statement regarding the collapse, leaving citizens, businesses, and stakeholders uncertain about the cause and resolution of the issue.

The collapse adds to a growing list of power disruptions in 2024. Earlier this year, on February 4, the grid crashed, cutting system capacity from 2,407MW to just 31MW before dropping to zero by 1 pm. Another major blackout occurred on August 5.
