The new speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has occupied her office amid tension over the speaker’s seat.
The assembly complex was heavily guarded by security personnel, who screened journalists and other individuals attempting to enter the premises.
The heightened security measures were put in place due to fears of a potential showdown, following the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa by 32 of the 39 Assembly members two weeks ago.
Obasa, upon his return abroad, had insisted that he remain the number one lawmaker of the assembly “until the right thing has been done.”
Monday’s plenary session marked the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s removal. The assembly complex was surrounded by at least three police vehicles, with other security vehicles stationed inside the complex.
Obasa has been absent from all three sessions.
