A senior aide to Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has resigned from his position and formally exited the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a fresh shake-up within the state’s political circle.

Bashir A. Shaba, who served as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the governor, announced his resignation in a letter where he expressed deep concerns over political and governance trends in Niger State and Nigeria.

In the letter, Shaba said his decision was not sudden. He explained that it came after careful thought and wide consultation, stressing that he could no longer continue in the role in good conscience.

“However, after careful reflection, wide consultation, and sincere self-examination, I have reached the conclusion that I can no longer continue in this role,” he stated.

Shaba said his growing dissatisfaction with the current political direction informed his decision to step aside from government. According to him, the prevailing system no longer reflects his personal values or vision for public service.

“My resignation is borne out of growing dissatisfaction with the prevailing political developments and governance direction in Niger State and Nigeria at large, which no longer align with my personal convictions, principles, and vision for genuine public service,” he said.

He further explained his view of politics as a platform meant to serve the people, not personal interests. He stressed that once conscience and political reality no longer align, stepping away becomes necessary.

“Politics, for me, must remain a tool for service, accountability, and people-centered leadership. When personal conscience and political reality no longer align, integrity demands a clear decision,” Shaba added.

Beyond resigning his appointment, Shaba also announced his departure from the ruling APC. He disclosed that he has now joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he described as a more credible alternative.

“Consequently, I have also taken the decision to terminate my membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Going forward, I have chosen to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition I believe offers a more credible platform to pursue good governance, accountability, inclusiveness, and a people-driven political future for our state and country,” he said.

Shaba was quick to dismiss speculations of internal conflict within the government. He clarified that his resignation was not based on personal grievances with Governor Bago or members of the administration.

“This decision is not driven by personal animosity or bitterness toward the Governor or members of the administration,” he said.

He maintained respect for the governor and wished the state government well in its development efforts.

“I continue to hold His Excellency and the office he occupies in high regard and sincerely wish the Niger State Government success in its efforts to move the state forward,” Shaba noted.

Describing his move as a turning point, Shaba said he is beginning a new phase in his political journey, guided by conscience and commitment to the people.

“This step represents a new chapter, guided by conscience, courage, and commitment to the people,” he stated.

He concluded by reaffirming his resolve to remain active in politics and public life, insisting that integrity and public interest will continue to guide his actions.

“I remain steadfast in my resolve to contribute positively to the political development of Niger State and Nigeria, wherever principle, integrity, and the people’s interest are truly respected. History will always favour those who stand for what they believe is right,” Shaba added.
