The Nigeria Police Force has informed detained activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, of three additional petitions lodged against him.
The development came on Friday after a media visit arranged by the police which reportedly ended in chaos.
During the visit, Sowore used the opportunity to demand the immediate removal of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, accusing the authorities of wasting the media’s time.
Following the confrontation, the IGP Monitoring Team reportedly returned to the detention facility with a police cameraman, claiming they had received three fresh petitions against Sowore.
This occurred in the presence of his lawyer, Marshal Abubakar. It is understood that both men rejected the new allegations before the police team departed.
The activist had earlier faced two petitions, one from the office of the IGP and another from a female police officer alleged by insiders to have risen unusually fast through the ranks due to a close relationship with the police chief.
Speaking with the press during the earlier visit, Sowore appeared with a bandaged hand, alleging he was assaulted by police officers who broke his hand. He criticised the authorities for providing only a nurse instead of a doctor and for staging what he called a “shameful show” to downplay the reality of his detention.
“I have been expecting this from the Nigerian police. I am not surprised by this show of shame,” he said. “They should release me and apologise, but they are ashamed. I am disappointed in President Tinubu for allowing the country to be reduced to this.”
