BREAKING: NLC President Ajaero to Face Police Questioning Despite DSS Arrest

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, and the Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja, will face police questioning on September 30, 2024, despite Ajaero’s recent arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to human rights lawyer and counsel for the NLC, Femi Falana, SAN, the duo will be grilled over petitions written against the NLC, including one by Airpeace accusing them of “public disruption.”

It is understood that Airpeace has withdrawn the petition and settled amicably with the NLC leadership.

Falana questioned the police’s decision to proceed with the questioning despite the withdrawal by the airline.

“Airpeace itself noted that it has withdrawn the petition. So, why does the police still want to quiz them on September 30? Yes, they have agreed to the September 30 extension,” he said.

Ajaero and Ugboaja had requested an extension of the police invite.

It can be recalled that Ajaero was arrested on Monday morning by DSS operatives at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom to attend a conference on workers’ rights and social justice.

Reacting to the arrest, the NLC has also given the Federal Government an ultimatum to release Ajaero unconditionally by Monday midnight or face severe consequences.

The NLC in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting on Monday described Ajaero’s arrest and detention as “brazen and illegal”.
