JUST IN: Kidnapped judge and driver regain freedom in Akwa Ibom state

Justice Joy Unwana, a judge at Oron High Court in Akwa Ibom State, and her driver, whom gunmen abducted, have been successfully freed.

The positive development was confirmed by Ini Ememobong, the information commissioner, in an official statement released on Saturday.

The judge and her driver were reportedly kidnapped while returning from a court session.

The incident triggered widespread concern and led to protests by various branches of the Nigerian Bar Association, resulting in the shutdown of court proceedings, notably in Oron, where Justice Unwana serves as a judge.

Receiving the judge, Governor Umo Eno expressed a solid resolve to ensure that those responsible for the abduction face the full wrath of the law.

Emphasizing the government’s commitment, Governor Umo Eno assured residents of Akwa Ibom of swift action in bringing the culprits to justice.

Appreciating the efforts made in their rescue, the statement relayed Justice Joy Unwana’s gratitude to the governor for his concern and dedication to securing their release.

She shared the harrowing experience she faced while in captivity, offering prayers that no one else should endure such a traumatic ordeal.

“The Governor, specifically, appreciated the Ministry of Internal Security for their strategic coordination and use of local intelligence in the handling of security issues,” the statement read.
