A Kwara State High Court has convicted and sentenced five suspects involved in the Offa robbery incident to death.
The judge, Justice Salman, who passed the judgement on Thursday, declared the accused guilty of unlawful possession of firearm, robbery with a weapon, and negligent manslaughter.
The Offa robbery incident took place in 2018.
A witness in the case, Shamsudeen Bada, had, two years ago, alleged that men of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by embattled DCP Abba Kyari tortured him.
He claimed that the operatives had him tortured in a bid to have him implicate ex-senate president Bukola Saraki in the bank robbery.
He said this at the Kwara State High Court.
He disclosed this while recounting his experience at the resumed trial of the suspects in the robbery case in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
According to reports, five suspects, namely, Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, and two others, were charged in court by the police.
The police charged them with criminal conspiracy to rob the banks, murder of nine policemen and other citizens, and illegal possession of firearms.
When he was cross-examined in court, Baba revealed that while he was in detention, the Abba Kyari-led IRT operatives promised them they would be freed if they named Saraki as the person that sponsored them.
