Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is set to embark on another medical leave of absence starting Wednesday, December 13th, 2023.
Richard Olatunde, chief press secretary to the governor, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
“During his medical leave, Governor Akeredolu will prioritise his health and ensure a full recovery before resuming his official duties,” the statement said.
The medical leave follows an earlier one this year, also for treatment of an undisclosed illness. The governor, who was flown abroad for treatment over a medical condition in June, returned to Nigeria in September. However, he stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
During his absence, Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will take over the reins of the state as Acting Governor.
“A formal letter regarding the medical leave and a notice formally transferring power in line with the Nigerian Constitution will be transmitted to the House of Assembly.
“As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a widely respected Nigerian, Governor Akeredolu has consistently delegated power to his deputy during his annual vacations. This practice was observed on April 1, 2021, April 1, 2022, April 3, 2023, and July 10, 2023, when he embarked on previous vacations,” the statement added.
Reports suggest that Governor Akeredolu will travel to Germany for further medical treatment, with concerns mounting about a potential worsening of his condition.
Though the specific illness remains unconfirmed, he is said to be receiving treatment for leukaemia and undergoing chemotherapy.
