Former governor of Abia state, Orji Kalu has been released from Kuje correctional facility in Abuja on Friday morning.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that his release is coming hours after the Supreme Court nullified his conviction and ordered a retrial of his case for money laundering and misappropriation of public funds during his time as the governor of the Southeast state.
It was learned that the Abia Senator has now moved to his residence off Queen Amina Street within the perimeter of Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
This newspaper had reported that a seven-member panel of the apex court, in a unanimous verdict delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, declared that the conviction null and void.
Justice Eko declared that Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Kalu, was already a justice of the Court of Appeal when he ruled and sentenced Kalu and his co-defendant.
He held that a Justice of the Court of Appeal cannot operate as a judge of the Federal High Court, and ordered the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign the case for trial.
