A terrible boat mishap in Niger state on Sunday, September 10, has claimed the lives of more than 30 persons (all farmers).
NTA reports that apart from the farmers, several others are still missing due to the tragedy that took place in the Gbajibo community, Mokwa Local Government area of the state.
This news agency gathered the troubling report from the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC).
Also, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) on Sunday confirmed that over 100 persons were on board the boat, adding that the victims, who were from Gbajibo, Ekwa, and Yankyade communities, were on the way to their farms located on the other side of the River Niger (old Gbajibo).
According to the public relations officer of NSEMA, Ibrahim Husseini, the agency is in collaboration with the Mokwa local government officials and the community local divers to conduct a search, rescue, and recovery operation at the scene of the incident.
Husseini revealed: “So far, 26 corpses have been recovered while over 30 have been rescued as the operation is ongoing. Over 100 persons are said to be on board the boat when the incident occurred.”
